(Staff Photo) Instead of waiting any longer for the action of state legislators or the Indiana Department of Transportation, residents, businesses and organizations from throughout Owen County provided the needed funding to help “light up” State Road 42 in Cunot near the Cunot Community Center.

In the past five years, nine lives have been taken in the short, quarter-of-amile stretch of State Road 42 running in front of the Cunot Community Center. Now, five utility pole lights are providing plenty of visual assistance for drivers along the state route.

“The outpouring of help in the form of monetary donations in this time of troubled economic circumstances has been simply amazing. So far we have been able to install five lights in some of the darkest spots along State Road 42 around the center,” Cunot Community Center President Reese Nichols said. “The help and the caring shown from all parts of the county has been very humbling to me.”

Nichols was especially touched by the efforts and kindness of those in the opposite portion of Owen County, residents and businesses on State Road 43.

“Here is a community, the people of Owen County, that during very difficult economic times have come up with donations from the furthest corners of the county for an organization in the far northwest corner of the county to help protect our children,” Nichols expressed. “People who had no idea who or what the Cunot Community Center was, but recognized a need when they heard it and responded with speed and dispatch. Thank you is just not enough to say to express our deep and sincere gratitude. God bless you, God bless Owen County, and God bless America!”

As of press time, the following businesses and individuals had contributed with a donation to the streetlight fund for the Cunot Community Center: Mark Gerberding with First Saturday Construction & Salvage, Robert Hamm Barbershop and Rustic Furniture, Melissa and Eric Fleetwood of Fleetwood Logging, Kenny Bland Auctions and Appraisals, John and Donna Ward of D & W Trading Post, Collision Concepts, Kathleen’s Gymnastics, Michael Jobs with Quality Surfaces, Inc., Indiana Limestone Fabricators, C. Ebrele & K. Norris of Ebco Painting and Construction, Rachel Weddle, Al and Bonnie Tinsley, Phillip and Virginia Vannice, and the Donald VanDer- Moere family.

Any individuals or organizations wishing to donate to the cause of placing security light poles along a short stretch of State Road 42 in Cunot are encouraged to make checks payable to the Cunot Community Center, Inc. Donations can be sent to the organization at 5530 State Road 42, Poland, Indiana, 47868, attention Reese Nichols.
