Pfc. Brett Everett Wood, 19


 Private First Class Brett Everett Wood, 19, of Spencer, assigned to the 1st Platoon Charlie Company 1-5 Infantry Battalion 125 SBCT, passed away September 9, 2011 in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. Pfc. Wood joined the Army in July 2010 and graduated from Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He arrived in Alaska in November 2010. His brigade deployed to Afghanistan in mid-April 2011 for a one-year tour in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Pfc. Wood was born in Bloomington, Indiana on April 23, 1992. He was a 2010 graduate of Owen Valley High School. He was a member of the football and wrestling teams during his sophomore year and a member of the Air Force Junior ROTC one year. He enjoyed BMX racing, cooking, hunting and fishing. Brett worked at the Owen Valley Health Campus before enlisting.

Brett is survived by his parents, Mitch and Angela Wood of Highland, Michigan, and Malissa and Chris Frye of Spencer; brothers, Nikk (Shelby) Wood serving in Afghanistan, Cory Poland of Spencer and Brandon Wood of Highland, Michigan; sister, Amber Poland of Spencer; and grandparents, Charles and Evelyn Wood of Spencer and Jim and Sandy Corns of Spencer.

A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 20, 2011 in the main gymnasium of Owen Valley High School. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the same location.

Memorial Contributions may be made to either the Owen Valley High School JROTC or the DNR.
