WCC Win Goes To CHS Volleyball Over North Putnam Lady Cougars

by Donna Hardy

A West Central Conference match-up against the North Putnam Cougars resulted in a win for the Cloverdale varsity volleyball squad, winning 3-1.

“It was a great night of volleyball,” Cloverdale varsity coach Kathy Moore said. “We were playing a conference match, a match for the Putnam County Paddle, and a breast cancer awareness match all at one time. It was all very exciting and both teams battled for control.”

The Lady Clovers picked up wins in the first two games by scores of 25-17 and 25-16. However, the Lady Cougars fought back with a 25-23 win in the third game.

It was another close contest in the fourth game, but the Lady Clovers came away victorious, 25-23, to take the match.

“North Putnam did a great job of putting on a breast cancer awareness event, lots of prizes, t-shirt sales, and a serving game,” coach Moore said. “The band was there and it was a very enjoyable event. It’s great when two rival schools can come together for a community service event. Our student council did a great job of raising money through t-shirt sales as well, earning $411.”

Leading Cloverdale in scoring against the Cougars was Mariah Oetken, who had 14 points with two aces. Rebekah Jordan had 13 points, Bristy Skiles and Bradanne Toney six each, Taylor Jones six points with three aces, Paige Gruener five points, and Lindsay Robson and Katie Fulkerson three points each.

On the offensive attack, Toney led with 15 kills, while Jones had 13, Oetken eight, Gruener four, Fulkerson two, and Skiles and Adrianna Patterson one apiece.

Defensively, Toney had 19 digs and three blocks, Jordan had nine digs, Jones eight, Oetken seven with three blocks, Skiles six digs and one block, Gruener four digs and two blocks, Fulkerson four digs, Robson three, and Jones one block.

The varsity squad is now 2-2 in the WCC and 10-4 on the season.

Junior varsity play also resulted in a 2-1 win for the Lady Clovers. They are now 14-3 on the season.
