Staff Report

Putnam County Commissioner Nancy Fogle and Putnam County Treasurer Sharon Owens recently joined more than 300 other county officials from around the state who attended the Association of Indiana Counties’ (AIC) 2012 County Legislative Conference.

County officials met with their legislators to express their concerns about local government issues at this two-day event sponsored by the AIC. The event was held at the Sheraton City Centre in downtown Indianapolis, February 7-8. The AIC staff briefed county officials about legislation that would have an impact on local government reform, elections, assessment appeals, 911 funding, investments and tax collections. Workshop topics addressed paper terrorism and changes to Indiana’s public retirement system.

Several state officials were on hand to speak to county officials, including: state auditor Tim Berry, state treasurer Richard Mourdock, Gretchen Billmeier and Whitney Deal with the Indiana Public Retirement System, and FBI Special Agents Glen Carlson and Bradley Bookwalter. The keynote speaker was Indiana Fiscal Policy Institute President John Ketzenberger. During the event county officials also visited the statehouse to speak with their state senators and state representatives.

The AIC is a nonprofit organization established in 1957 for the betterment of county government. Various functions of the AIC include lobbying the Indiana General Assembly on behalf of counties, serving as liaison among counties, state and federal agencies as well as providing technical assistance, training and communications to county officials and employees.
