Staff Report

James Lee Rike James Lee Rike More than four years after a tragic accident claimed the life of Spencer Elementary School third grader James Lee Rike at his home north of Spencer, the people whose lives he touched the most will remember his life.

The fourth annual James Lee Rike Memorial Benefit Ride is set for Saturday, June 9, beginning at 12 noon at the Wayne American Legion Post #64, located at 601 South Holt Road in Indianapolis.

“Our hearts are full as we gather to work as a family each year, striving to make a difference in loving memory of our beloved James Lee,” said his grandmother, Barb Rike.

Motorcycle registration will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon, with fees of $15 per person. Cars are also welcome to participate.

The event will feature a poker run, door prizes, silent auction, and bike show. A $25 Harley-Davidson gift card will be awarded to the rider who brings the most new riders to the event.

Live entertainment begins at 6:30 p.m., featuring the Fabulous Thunder Road Band.

“We are proud to be hosted by the American Legion Riders of Wayne Post #64,” Barb noted. “The ALR members, who served our country in the U. S. Armed Forces, are still serving our communities with service to our veterans, and help for many worthy causes.”

The 100-mile trek will take riders through southern and western Indiana, with a scheduled stop at Harley-Davidson in Bloomington where participants will meet and be served refreshments by the Indiana Dream Team (IDt).

Proceeds from the James Lee Rike Memorial Benefit Ride are shared by IDt’s James Lee Rike Education Center, and Children’s Death benefits.

Last year, the ride donated $1,000 to aid in the funeral expenses for sixyear old Andrew Frye of Martinsville. Also, $500 was donated to a mother who lost two sons. A donation was made as payment towards a cemetery marker.
