(Staff Photo) Twelve Owen County seniors attending Owen Valley High School (OVHS), Cloverdale High School (CHS) and the Indiana Academy were recently honored by the Owen County Community Foundation (OCCF) as finalist candidates for the 2013 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship.

The scholarship program began assisting Indiana high school seniors in 1998, with 30 local high school graduates receiving full tuition and a book stipend while attending any four-year college or university in the state of Indiana of their choice.

The local seniors were honored during a banquet hosted by the OCCF on Thursday, March 7, in the Christian Life Center of the Spencer First Christian Church Christian.

Since its inception, 30 Owen County students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, enabling them to attend the Indiana colleges of their choice. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 who have earned bachelor’s degrees. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships are a statewide initiative of the Lilly Endowment to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education.

The Owen County Community Foundation believes every student needs to graduate from high school and continue their education, whether through a four-year college, a two-year program, or vocational training. Education is a personal asset and a great building block to help make our communities better places to live, grow and work.

The program provides a four-year tuition scholarship for undergraduate study in baccalaureate programs at any four-year college or university in Indiana. Required fees and an annual $900 book stipend are also included.
