Owners Seek Donations To Benefit Ongoing Restoration Of Aging Cataract School House

Old Cataract School House Old Cataract School House Those involved with restoring the old Cataract School House are seeking donated items to be sold at a benefit spring sale later this month.

The purpose of the upcoming sale is to benefit the restoration of the oneroom school house located at 2661 Cunot-Cataract Road.

The existing school house dates back to 1886 and replaced the original log school house which presumably burned. The original school house was located on the same grounds as the current building, which remained in operation as a school house until 1947, educating students in grades first through eighth.

A restoration effort began in September of 2012 and while much has been accomplished in a short amount time, much still remains to be done. The foundation needs to be repaired, electrical wiring installed, water and septic system installed, and painting, residing and interior work completed, including the historic preservation of the old stove from the Indianapolis Stove Company. Insulation also needs to be completed, as well as the installation of a fuel efficient heating and cooling system.

Donations can be dropped off at the school house if someone is on site, or at 9915 Cunot-Cataract Road. For more information, contact Michelle Roy at 765-795-2605 or 317- 775-3537. Vendors welcome. Building materials such as insulation, exterior white paint and electrical wiring are also needed, in addition to volunteers.

Donations must be made by April 9th. The sale will take place April 18-21, and again on April 25-28.
