Now In Its Tenth Year, Indiana Uplands Wine Trail Expands To Include Owen Valley Winery

Staff Report

The Indiana Uplands Wine Trail (IUWT) announced last week its expansion to ten wineries with the addition of the Owen Valley Winery of rural Spencer. Now in its 10th year, the Uplands Wine Trail, Indiana’s first wine trail, reaches from Bloomington on the north to the I-64 corridor on the south. Owen Valley Winery joins the wine trail on the heels of the creation of the new Indiana Uplands American Viticultural Area (AVA).

Owen Valley’s vineyards are located by their country tasting room and winery at 491 Timber Ridge Road. A range of wines are vinted at Owen Valley including estate grown Steuben blush and Traminette, as well as fruit wines such as persimmon and strawberry and dry offerings including Chardonnay and Syrah.

A second Owen Valley tasting room is located in the restored Tivoli Theatre in Spencer. Both tasting rooms are open to the public Wednesday through Sunday. More details about Owen Valley Winery can be found online at www.owenvalleywinery.com.

The Indiana Uplands Wine Trail passport for the 2013-2014 season, which began this month, will include Owen Valley Winery. Visitors completing the trail will receive a 10th Anniversary Wine Trail print which includes the new AVA map.

“Sweet Owen Convention and Visitors Bureau was pleased to receive information through Kim Doty, president of the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail, announcing that Owen Valley Winery has been added to their trail,” noted Sweet Owen CVB Tourism Director Marilyn Jackson. “We feel that this will provide a big boost to Owen County tourism and bring more visitors into our county. In our research we have found that people enjoy traveling the wine trails and while doing so they spend time in the community discovering other venues and making new friends. Our goal is to work with the partners in our community to let those outside of our county know all the wonderful things Owen County has to offer.”

Owen Valley’s first event as a member of the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail will be its participation in the Uncork the Uplands event on July 27th at the Bloomington Convention Center. All ten wineries and their wines will be featured with artisan foods and fare from regional restaurants. A chef cook-off, wine cocktails, winemaker speeches, entertainment and silent auction will round out the evening along with an optional vineyard tour at Creekbend Vineyard in the afternoon. Owen Valley joins the other nine wineries on the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail including Brown County, Butler, Oliver,

Carousel, French Lick, Winzerwald, Turtle Run, Best and Huber. For details about Uncork and to purchase early bird tickets, visit www.uncorktheuplands.com.

The Indiana Uplands Wine Trail is nestled among the rolling hills of southern Indiana and showcases ten wineries – Best Vineyards Winery, Brown County Winery, Butler Winery, Carousel Winery, French Lick Winery, Huber Winery, Oliver Winery, Owen Valley Winery, Turtle Run Winery, and Winzerwald Winery – each proudly coupling high quality wines with a wonderfully unique epicurean experience.
