County Circuit Court Judge Denies Inmate’s Request For Early Release

Staff Report

Matthew J. Walker, 23, of Spencer, one of two men sentenced in connection with the 2009 death of Richard Tony Pursel, has been serving a 14-year executed sentence in the Indiana Department of Corrections

(DOC). In July of 2013, he began filing prose letters with the court asking for an early release from prison. The court set these letters for hearing and after listening to arguments from the State and the defendant, Judge Lori Thatcher Quillen denied the request on September 17th and ordered that the defendant be returned to the DOC.

Owen County Prosecutor Don VanDerMoere noted the defendant has been incarcerated continuously since charges were filed against him in January of 2009.

According to the Department of Corrections, Walker’s earliest possible release date is scheduled for October 8, 2014. After his release he will be supervised by the adult probation department for a period of six years.
