Alaska Christian Church To Celebrate Homecoming And 178th Anniversary

On Sunday, October 6, Alaska Christian Church will celebrate its annual homecoming and 178th year anniversary, with a special concert by “Mahseh.” Beginning at 10 a.m., in the worship center, this group will present a mini concert of gospel and contemporary songs. Breaking at 10:30 a.m., Cafe Alaska will be open for coffee/juices/ goodies, in the north foyer of the church. Celebration worship begins at 10:47 a.m. with old hymns of the church being featured and special music by Mahseh. Preaching minister, Kevin Short, will present the morning message. Following the service, a pitch-in meal will be served in the fellowship hall area. Mahseh is a group from the Gosport/Lewisville area, and members of the late Lee Earl and Velma Richards family.

Displays will be in the foyer area and the church will celebrate their existence since 1836. The original church building was located 1/4 of a mile from the present structure, and was then replaced with a bigger building at the crossroads in Alaska. That building was destroyed by a tornado in 1882. The present sanctuary was completed in 1884 with additions to the building in 1949 and 1974. The church has experienced times of dissension, over the use of musical instruments. Today both the organ and piano and other instruments are used at times. At one time members were voted from the membership over different things. Today, fourth generation family members attend ACC of the original founders in 1836.

Today, the church is experiencing a growth in numbers, and once again thriving in the community, serving members from Owen, Putnam, Morgan, Vigo, and Marion Counties. A kidz worship time has grown greatly in the past year, as several youth now attend ACC each week. The adult choir meets weekly for rehearsals and presents special musicals at Easter and Christmas. The church has a special Sunday honoring police, fire, armed force members, and EMT personnel.

Members invite friends and former members and neighbors of the church to “Come Home To Alaska” on this special Sunday and experience the new birth of this congregation. The church is located at 7230 Lewisville Road just west of the old Lewisville Store. The church office is 317-383-6300 for information, or you may visit their website at: http:// netministries.org/ see/ churches/ch25311.
