Bloomington Man Pleads Guilty, Receives Suspended Sentence

Staff Report

Peter S. Raventos Peter S. Raventos Peter S. Raventos, 44, of Bloomington, appeared in Owen Circuit Court on September 24th where he pleaded guilty to a charge of false informing, a Class B misdemeanor.

The charge stemmed from an incident that occurred on June 25, 2012 at McCormick’s Creek State Park. At 10:05 p.m. on that date, Raventos placed a 911 call and advised the dispatcher that he had been shot by an unknown person while running the trails at the park. Police responded to his location and immediately began an investigation.

The investigation, which was led by detectives from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, showed that Raventos’ version of events was untrue. After serving search warrants and subpoenas, officers pieced together the events which led up to the shooting incident.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed in this case, officers discovered that earlier in the day on the 25th, Raventos had purchased a 20-gauge shotgun from a pawn shop in Bedford and then traveled to several Bloomington area retailers and purchased bungee cords, shotgun shells and plywood. Raventos took those items and others gathered from his residence to a remote part of McCormick’s Creek State Park where he arranged them in such a way that he could shoot himself in the back.

In court, Raventos admitted that he made a false report to 911 and ultimately admitted that the findings of the investigation were true.

According to Owen County Prosecutor Don VanDerMoere, Raventos was given a suspended sentenced and was placed on probation for 365 days with a requirement to complete community service, to attend and complete mental health counseling and to abide by the trespass order issued by the Department of Natural Resources.
