‘Cover’ The Bases With Cover Crop Field Day On Thursday, December 5

by Sara Campfield
Owen County SWCD

Do you know how cover crops help the soil? Or that different kinds of cover crops are used for a variety of purposes? You are invited to discover the answers at a field day on Thursday, December 5. Registration for the event starts at 8:30 a.m., with the program starting at 9:00 a.m. at 2838 Hardscrabble Road. Doughnuts and coffee will be available for your enjoyment.

Owen County resident Doris Scully will speak on how cover crops affect the soil, followed by Ryan Bell discussing the different types of cover crops. Scully works for the Natural Resources Conservation District and serves on the soil health team. Bell works for Pro-Harvest Seeds. The speakers will be followed by a short discussion at a soil pit that will show the cover crop in action.

There is an opportunity to see more fields planted with cover crop on a driving tour followed by lunch at Chambers Smorgasbord in Spencer. This field day is sponsored by the Soil and Water Conservation Districts of Monroe, Owen, and Putnam counties. Attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather, as the speakers will be presenting in a barn that is not heated.
