County Awarded Federal Funds Under Emergency Food And Shelter Program

Owen County has been notified that it will be awarded $3,809 for the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.

The selection is made by a National Board that is chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, The Salvation Army, United Jewish Communities and United Way of America. The Local Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country. A Local Board made up of area churches, social service agencies and local government will determine how the funds awarded to Owen County are distributed among local agencies in the area. In anticipation of this award and deadlines, the Local EFSP Board is encouraging local agencies that meet requirements to apply for the funds.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.

Last year, Owen County distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds with the Spencer Presbyterian Church, Spencer United Methodist Church, Gosport Food Pantry, Middleway House, Lighthouse Tabernacle, Cunot Community Center, and Garrard Chapel.

Nonprofit organizations or public agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Heather Donovan for an application. Donovan can be reach at 631 West Edgewood Drive, Ellettsville, IN 47429; by calling 812-876-3383, extension 521; or by emailing hdonovan@area10agency.org. The deadline for applications to be received is by 12 noon on Friday, January 17, 2014.

The Local Board will meet on Wednesday, January 22, at 5:30 p.m. at the Owen County Public Library to allocate the funds.
