(Staff Photo) On Tuesday evening, March 11, the Owen County Community Foundation (OCCF) welcomed twenty six local students during the foundation’s 2014 Scholarships Celebration, held in the Christian Life Center of the Spencer First Christian Church. The special guests, who have applied for one of the 52 scholarships managed by the local charity, were joined by their families and other guests including donors and volunteers of the OCCF. Included in the group were the eight candidates vying to become the 32nd local Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program is designed to raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana and increase awareness of the potential of Indiana’s community foundations to improve the quality of life of the state’s residents.

Begun in 1998, the program offers four-year, fulltuition scholarships to Indiana students who intend to work toward a baccalaureate degree at any accredited public or private college or university in Indiana. The scholarship also provides $900 per year for required books and equipment.

The program is administered by Independent Colleges of Indiana and includes significant participation by the community foundations in each of Indiana’s 92 counties.

This year’s candidates are:

•Joslyn Bucy, daughter of Jasmine DeFord and Jason Bucy. Owen Valley High School (OVHS).

•Dillan Hege, son of Chris and Karen Hege. OVHS.

•Cecelia Herrington, daughter of Scott and Heather Herrington. OVHS.

•Ashlyn Hines-Lanham, daughter of Josh Lanham and Robin Hines-Lanham. OVHS.

•Sarah Jones, daughter of Rob Jones. OVHS.

•Tim Marlett, son of Michael and Maria Marlett. OVHS.

•Taylor Mescall, son of Timothy and Debra Mescall. CHS.

• Morgan Schafer, daughter of Ken and Rhonda Schafer. OVHS.

The evening’s program was held to celebrate educational achievement in Owen County with a special emphasis on the scholarship program.

“Our scholarship program is also an important part of our educational support for Owen County,” noted OCCF Executive Director Mark Rogers. “But our scholarship funds also serve other purposes. Some are poignant reminders of loved ones lost too soon like the Private First Class Brett Wood lost in combat, young Michael Magner lost to a traffic accident but remembered in the Michael D. Magner Scholarship for veterinary studies.

“We also remember long-time teachers like Miss Vada Baker, Loretta Heidrick, Roma Wilson, John Moore, Myrtle Marshall, Ione Fulk, and Jim Fulford and his wife, Wilma. There are businesses we celebrate through awards and we remember all of the old high schools that preceded the OVHS/ CHS era. And there are many more local residents both living and gone who we memorialize with annual scholarship awards.”

We want to commend these ladies and gentlemen for stepping up and taking action. And it’s just the start! Congratulations to you all!”

Lastly, the foundation took the opportunity to recognize the 31 previous local recipients of a Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, eight of which were in attendance, along with scholarship administrator Peg Miller of the Independent Colleges of Indiana, who’s set to soon retire.
