Aaron Whitlock Aaron Whitlock Cloverdale High School senior golfer Aaron Whitlock was recently named Academic All-State for the 2014 season.

According to Cloverdale boys’ golf coach Doug Wokoun, this is the first time in many years that a Cloverdale golfer has received this honor.

In the past, golfers including Kyle Faletic in 2006, Sean Rhine in 2008, and Sam Jordan in 2011 were on the honorable mention list for Academic All-State.

“Aaron is in some pretty special company with the young men who have come before him, and I think his accomplishment is something that will set a high standard for all of our future golfers in the future,” coach Wokoun explained.

The award was announced by the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association. Whitlock, the son of Todd and Dianna Whitlock, is one of only 15 senior golfers throughout Indiana to be honored with this award.

There were 54 golfers nominated for All-State. In order to be considered, they need to have at least a 3.5 grade point average, at least 1000 on their SAT, and they must be in the top 15 percent of their class.

“Aaron is an outstanding young man,” coach Wokoun added. “He was our captain this season, and his leadership was invaluable. This award recognized one part of who he is, but his teammates understand that he brought much more to our team than just a great grade point average. As our only senior, he was like an assistant coach in some ways and obviously led by example, both in the classroom and on the course.”

The coach continued, “Aaron suffered a semisevere hand injury in May but did not miss a match. In a senior year, he might have just shut down and finished his season right then. Aaron not only played through the injury, but he excelled. His round at the sectional was the highlight of his season. Aaron has always exemplified the best attitude possible and has worked very hard to improve his game. We are extremely proud of his accomplishment and the recognition he has received.”

The state championship banquet is scheduled to be held at the Golf Club of Indiana on Friday, June 20. Along with recognition for the winning team and individual golfer, along with the All-State team, those golfers chosen for Academic All-State will also be recognized.

Whitlock will be attending IUPUI in the fall.
