Closing at its regular time of 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, the ‘Y’ will reopen for normal business hours on Monday, August 18, at 5:30 a.m. The project includes repaving of the facility’s parking lot, along with general interior maintenance. In the event of inclement weather, the project and closure will be postponed one week, to begin on August 21. In the event of a postponement of work, the ‘Y’ would reopen on Monday, August 25.

“Last winter obviously took a heavy toll on all the roads in our area. Our entire parking area needs to be resealed and our driveway is breaking up in several areas,” YMCA CEO Darrell White explained. “We believe that a combination of the very bad weather, time, and a few heavy vehicles have taken a major toll on our access drive.”

White said instead of patching areas of the parking lot, the YMCA facility committee agreed to remove old material and replace with a new compacted base layer of fill, along with two new layers of asphalt.

“This approach will take an additional day of construction time and cost more than simply paving over the defective areas. However, the facility committee determined that this option would not only provide a better, more durable roadway, but that it would actually save money over the next ten years,” White added. “The contractor needs one day to remove the defective roadbed and prepare the base for the new asphalt layers that will be installed on Friday. This is our best option since the hot asphalt is not available on weekends. The contractor will also use weekend to re-seal all three levels of the parking lot with two coats of material and re-paint the stripes. Everything will have time to cure and dry on Sunday so we can open at our usual time Monday morning.”

Those participating in one of the Y’s adult group wellness classes scheduled for August 14 and 15 will see class fees adjusted to offset cancelled classes. Those who have pre-registered will receive an account adjustment. The YMCA Book Club meeting scheduled for Augoust 17 has been rescheduled for August 28 for the same time and same topic.

“We know this will cause some inconvenience for our members, but we believe this was the best alternative,” White added. “One very important point that we want to make is that this entire project is being funded by a very generous donation from a local patron. This donation, along with all the others we receive during our annual fund-raising campaign, help us do all the work we do in the community. Owen County is very fortunate to have so many individuals and business that support the ‘Y.’”
