‘Money Smart Week’ Event Coming To OCPL On Tuesday, October 21st

A week filled with free events to build the financial smarts of Monroe and Owen County community members is just around the corner. Money Smart Week, sponsored by the Financial Stability Alliance for South Central Indiana, in partnership with United Way of Monroe County and the Monroe County Public Library, will take place from Monday, October 20 through Saturday, October 25.

Money Smart Week takes place each spring and fall in South Central Indiana to raise awareness of local financial stability resources and improve financial literacy. Highlights this fall include learning more about health care coverage options and how to pay for college. Community members will also have the opportunity to learn about budgeting, elder justice, credit, preparing healthy meals economically, career options, and local food networks . The local Money Smart Week activities are part of a nationwide campaign to help consumers improve their personal finances.

Many adults admit to not having the skills or confidence to manage their own personal finances:

•18% of individuals in Indiana report that their households spend more than their income;

•22% of adults in America do not know how much they spend on essentials like housing and food, and more than half – 56% – do not have a budget; and

•41% of adults would grade themselves a C, D, or F on their knowledge of personal finance.

Locally, “From Coverage To Care: Understanding Your Health Coverage” will be presented Tuesday, October 21, from 1-2 p.m. at the Owen County Public Library, located at 10 South Montgomery Street in Spencer. This is the first Money Smart Week event to be held in Owen County! Individual Solutions at IU Health will give an overview of the new health care law and federal marketplace, as well as review what plans are out there and how to best choose them and use them! You can also find out where and how to receive help in Owen County. This workshop will include the work that Individual Solutions does making referrals and directing consumers for assistance in Owen County; an overview of the marketplace insurance program, including changes to insurance because of the ACA; insurance terminology; overview of plan structures and offerings; and how to connect to primary care. Presented by Individual Solutions at IU Health.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, including a complete list of the week’s events, visit www.financialstabilityalliance.org.
