OV, Cloverdale Concert Bands To Perform In April 9th Showcase

Staff Report

Owen Valley High School will host its first-ever regional concert band showcase this coming Thursday, April 9 in the high school auditorium. The night will feature free performances by bands from OV, Cloverdale and Martinsville high schools.

OVHS Band Director Dominic Thompson noted that following each performance the bands will receive feedback from professional clinicians. The groups will use the feedback to prepare for an upcoming Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) organizational contest.

“While I cannot speak for the other groups, we typically don’t get to perform our contest music for a home crowd before going to contest,” Thompson said. “So this is a nice way for our groups to get recognized for the hard work they have put into these performances.”

Cloverdale High School will be the first to perform in Thursday’s showcase, taking the stage at 6:00 p.m. Clinician Jason Nam will provide the post-performance feedback.

Martinsville will perform for clinician Ron Sebben at 6:50 p.m. and Owen Valley for clinician Kevin Miles at 7:40 p.m. Each performance will last for approximately 50 minutes, with a light reception slated for 8:20 p.m.

Jason Nam is currently a doctoral candidate in Wind conducting at IU. He serves as an associate instructor in the Department of Bands at IU and the associate conductor for the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble. He previously served as director of bands at La Colina Junior High School and San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, California.

Kevin Miles has been an active adjudicator for the past twenty years for Drum Corps International, Drum Corps Midwest, and Drum Corps East. He has also served as an independent adjudicator for ISSMA, Oklahoma Bandmasters Association, Michigan Competing Band Association, South Carolina Music Association, and Kansas Bandmasters Association’s and many more.

Ron Sebben is the instrument inventory manager at IU’s Jacobs School of Music. He is also the conductor of the Bloomington Community Band and formerly served as director of bands at Clay City, and as assistant director of bands for schools in La- Porte, Texas.

OV will perform in the ISSMA organizational contest on Saturday, April 25 at Plainfield High School, with state qualifications scheduled for May 2 at Greenwood Community High School and concert state finals May 8-9 at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis.
