Owen Tourism Seeks Nominees For 2016 Bicentennial Relay

Staff Report

Nominations are currently being sought for those who will carry the torch as it passes through each of the Hoosier state’s 92 counties beginning on September 9, 2016. The torch will pass through Owen County on September 21, 2016 and arrive at the statehouse grounds on October 15, 2016.

The Sweet Owen Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking at least twenty Owen County residents or natives to participate in the relay.

While a specific route revision to the state bicentennial commission has been submitted by Owen County Tourism Director Marilyn Jackson, she notes the torch will enter Owen from Monroe County, travel into Spencer and head south into Greene County. The torch route will feature a caravan of State of Indiana vehicles, led by the Indiana State Police.

“We should know the official route sometime in September. We will start at the county line and there will be a runner that goes into (McCormick’s Creek State Park). That’s one of the things we had talked about with the State,” she explained. “We wanted to tie the state park into it because of the park’s 100th birthday. There will be a celebration in Spencer and it will be on the courthouse lawn. Once the torch leaves, it will go down U.S. 231 into Greene County.”

The torch will spend approximately an hour and thirty minutes in each county.

“I have a committee set up who will review all of the applications. Once we make a selection, we will submit those to the State for final approval,” Jackson added. “You don’t have to run, you can walk or ride a bicycle even.”

As of last Friday afternoon, Jackson had received just one nomination.

The criteria for nomination includes:

•Nominee must be a current or former resident of Owen County.

•Nominee can be of any age to participate; however, those age 14 and younger will be subject to specific rules and requirements for youth.

•Nominees must possess the physical ability to carry the torch for a minimum of a quarter mile, or engage in assistance of another person or mounting bracket.

•Nominees are required to complete a waiver form.

•Posthumous nominations will be accepted, with a substitute torchbearer submitted on behalf of the nominee.

•Each nominee is subject to a criminal background check.

One of the two following criteria must also be met:

•Nominee will have achieved personal and/or professional excellence or celebrity status OR

•Torchbearers will have made an outstanding contribution to their neighborhood, community, region, or state through service, stewardship and/or involvement.

Nomination forms will be available at various locations around Owen County and also can be found online at www.Indiana2016.org/torchrelay. While forms can also be submitted online, Jackson would prefer nominations be submitted locally at the Sweet Owen Convention & Visitors Bureau, located at 119 South Main Street in Spencer. Nomination forms can also be emailed to owentourism@gmail.com.
