Investigation Into Theft Of Standing Timber Leads To Poland Area Man’s Arrest

Staff Report

According to a probable cause affidavit prepared by Captain Detective Erich Teuton of the Owen County Sheriff’s Department, dispatch received a call of a reported theft of standing timber from the Coal City area on Wednesday, October 14. Detective Teuton and investigator Daniel McBride with the Owen County Prosecutor’s Office were assigned to the case.

A probable cause affidavit filed in one of the cases indicates the timber theft investigations led officers from Coal City to several areas throughout Owen County and ultimately to Putnam and Morgan counties. The report advises that since October 1, 2015, several victims have come forward to report that large trees had been cut and taken away from their properties without consent. The report advises that the local officers received help from Duane McCoy and Lanse Labonte who are both employed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

According to Owen County Prosecutor Don VanDerMoere, 44-yearold Larry Farley, Sr., of Poland, has been arrested on theft and criminal trespass charges related to the investigation and that other suspects will likely be charged after the investigation is completed. VanDerMoere issued a reminder that these criminal charges are only allegations and that the suspect is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

VanDerMoere encourages those with information concerning these cases or anyone who believes they may be victims to contact Detective Teuton at 812-829-4874.
