Community Foundation Plans Scholarships Celebration, Announces ‘16 Lilly Candidates

Staff Report

The Owen County Community Foundation (OCCF) will host its annual Scholarship Celebration on Tuesday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in the Spencer First Christian Church Christian Life Center. Among those to be recognized are the finalists for this year’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship.

The OCCF has awarded this full-tuition, four-year scholarship since 1998 to honor the county student who has demonstrated the highest achievements in academics, service to their high school and involvement in the community, leadership, and recognition through honors and awards earned while in high school.

This year, eight Owen County candidates competed for this scholarship. Six students attend Owen Valley High School, and two attend Cloverdale High School.

To become candidates, students resided in Owen County, had a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.8 on a 4.0 scale, and scored either a minimum of 1600 on the SAT or 23 on the ACT. All scholarship candidates are interviewed by OCCF’s volunteer scholarship committee. Using criteria developed by OCCF’s board of directors and approved by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI), the scholarship committee evaluates applications and recommends a nominee and alternate to the OCCF board.

ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in Indiana. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 who have earned bachelor’s degrees. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships are a statewide initiative of the Lilly Endowment to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Since its inception, 33 Owen County students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, enabling them to attend the Indiana colleges of their choice.

This year’s candidates are:

•Eleanor Coffin, Owen Valley High School, daughter of Frank and Julie Coffin.

•Makayla McQueen, Owen Valley High School, daughter of Chris and Angela McQueen.

•Jessika Meadows, Owen Valley High School, daughter of Rhonda Meadows and Scott Meadows.

•Ashley Minton, Cloverdale High School, daughter of Jerry and Christina Minton.

•Caroline Sebastian, Owen Valley High School, daughter of Ken and Judy Sebastian.

•Cayden Sparks, Owen Valley High School, son of Stephanie Sparks.

•Jackson Szczerbik, Cloverdale High School, son of Kristin and Brad Szczerbik.

•Daniel Woodruff, Owen Valley High School, son of Jack and Catherine Woodruff.

Begun in 1998, the Lilly program offers four-year, full-tuition scholarships to Indiana students who intend to work toward a baccalaureate degree at any accredited public or private college or university in Indiana. The scholarship also provides $900 per year for required books and equipment.
