OCSD investigation lands clerk in jail for stealing lottery tickets

Brenda S. Doyle Brenda S. Doyle A northern Owen County convenience store clerk is facing multiple theft charges related to stealing scratch off lottery tickets while working at the store.

Brenda S. Doyle, 47, Poland, was booked into the Owen County Security Center on August 29 on a warrant issued by the Owen Circuit Court I, regarding six counts of theft.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed in the case, Owen County Sheriff’s Detective Bill Snodgrass followed up on a case initiated by OCSD deputy Mitchell Fleetwood in late June of 2016.

Deputy Fleetwood was dispatched to the Millgrove Store in northern Owen County on June 30, 2016 regarding an employee theft complaint. Deputy Fleetwood learned that an employee was suspected of stealing scratch-off lottery tickets while working at the store.

During the course of the investigation, Detective Snodgrass secured surveillance video at the store and was able to identify a number of days which showed a particular employee, Brenda Doyle, removing and scratching tickets from the lottery display and cashing some of them out. Armed with this information, Detective Snodgrass made contact with Hoosier Lottery Investigator Andrew Morgan, who provided assistance to Detective Snodgrass during the investigation.

According to the report, Doyle is accused of stealing approximately $10,623.00 in ticket sales from Millgrove Store and $6,631.00 in winnings from the Hoosier Lottery.

According to Owen County Prosecutor Don VanDerMoere, Ms. Doyle was formally charged by his office with six counts of theft (level 6 felonies).

Ms. Doyle appeared in the Owen Circuit Court I for her initial hearing after posting bond and the court set the case for trial on February 1, 2017. Prosecutor VanDerMoere issued a reminder that criminal charges are only allegations and this defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
