(Photo by Chuck Hess) The Cloverdale Lady Clovers celebrated the holiday season with a championship in the Monrovia Lady Bulldog Winter Classic Tournament. The Cloverdale junior varsity girls finished third.

The Lady Clovers opened the first round against the host Lady Bulldogs, using double-digit scoring from five to boost the team to a 62-56 win. The victory punched Cloverdale’s ticket to the championship against South Putnam.

The Clovers last played the Eagles in the Putnam County Tournament, back in November, where they lost to the Eagles, 33-54. This game would be different. Each team came out strong and by the end of the first period it was 8-7, Clovers.

Second period play saw the Clovers out of sync, and the first half ended with the Eagles up, 22-16 The Clovers, however, came out of the locker room and regained the lead in the third period, 27-26. But, the Eagles would not go down easy. Twice during the final period, the Eagles would tie the Clovers and take the lead once. But, the Clovers were not shaken, and they came back to win 38-35.

Scoring was led by Tori Combs, who garnered 17 points, Hailey Thomas shot for six, Lakkain Price scored five points, Arianna McCracken and Lauren Meek both put up threepoint shots for three each, and Kelsey Helterbrand and Sammie Shrum added two points each.

The Cloverdale JV suffered an opening round loss to the host Lady Bulldogs, 42-32 to send the Clovers into the consolation round. Cloverdale prevailed over South Putnam to earn the third place trophy, 41-31.

The Lady Clovers will travel to Clay City to face the Lady Eels on Monday, Jan. 2, beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m.
