Vivian Whitaker is elected president as Cloverdale School Board reorganizes

Members of the Cloverdale School Board convened Monday, January 9 for their first meeting of 2017.

After the initial call to order, the new board members Katrina Lewis, Joe Mann, and JaceAnn Troutt, as well as, returning member Donna Fidler were all given the oath of office.

Next, the board organization for 2017 took place. Vivian Whitaker was elected president, Daniel Hofmann vice president, and Donna Fidler secretary.

The panel voted to keep the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. as their established meeting time and board compensation was voted on at $2,000 per year.

Mendy Shrout was appointed as corporation treasurer with Lynn Lotz named deputy treasurer. Corporation legal issues will be handled by the law office of Lewis & Kappes.

Several items of new business were approved.

A public hearing was held, and the proposed superintendent’s contract was approved. It includes the following:

•Base Annual Salary - $108,725 ($750 Stipend 2016-2017)

•Contract term - July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2018.

•A work year of two hundred sixty (260) days with annual entitlement of twenty (20) vacation days and ten (13) sick leave days.

•The Corporation contributes an amount equal to 3% of the Superintendent’s annual base salary to a retirement annuity plan.

•The same paid holidays as are provided to other full year administrators.

•Health insurance - As with other administrators, the Superintendent will be eligible to participate in the group insurance plans. The School Corporation pays the entire contribution except $1.00 toward the Superintendent’s premiums for a family medical insurance policy.

•Life insurance – The Corporation provides a term life insurance policy for the Superintendent.

•Teachers Retirement Fund (TRF) – The School Corporation pays the Superintendent’s statutorily required TRF contribution, which is currently 3% of the Superintendent’s base salary.

•Conferences – The School Corporation pays all reasonable expenses for the Superintendent to attend state and national conferences with prior Board approval.

• Mileage reimbursement – The School Corporation reimburses the Superintendent for mileage for school business travel at the current Federal rate.

•The School Corporation will defend, hold harmless and indemnify the Superintendent in legal actions involving incidents in which the Superintendent was legally acting within the scope of his employment.

•The superintendent will receive the same salary increase each year at the same dollar amount as the classroom teacher receiving the highest salary increase that year. This provision will apply regardless of whether the salary increase is in the form of a base salary increase, or a one-time stipend, or both.

A request was approved to dispose of surplus technology equipment. Six professional leaves, 13 field trips, and six facility use requests were approved as well.

The only personnel request put before the board was approved. Debbie Steffy was voted as a volunteer assistant coach for the CHS girls basketball team.

The next meeting of the Gosport Town Council will take place at 7 p.m., Monday, February 13 at the Arthur L. Johnson Administration Center.
