County highway worker killed Friday

Assistant superintendent, laborer struck by vehicle driven by co-worker

MICHAEL STANLEY | SPENCER EVENING WORLD Two Owen County Highway Department employees were struck by a privately owned vehicle driven by a co-worker early Friday morning, killing one on impact and sending the other to an area hospital.

According to Owen County Coroner Lorna Dhom, Rick Fishel, 60, Gosport, was pronounced dead at the scene by at the intersection of Jones and Little Mount Roads, north of Gosport just before 6:45 a.m.

According to Dhom and a press release from the Owen County Sheriff’s Department, Fishel, the assistant superintendent of the highway department, had came upon a fallen tree in the roadway and was out, in front of his county highway pickup truck, along with Jeff Hodges, 51, Paragon, utilizing a chain saw to cut and remove the debris.

While the two were working, a highway department co-worker, Chance Brewer, 24, Gosport, was traveling southbound on Jones Road and told deputies from the OCSD he did not see either man in the roadway before striking both as he drove through the intersection in his 2007 Jeep Commander.

Hodges was transported to IU Health-Bloomington Hospital for evaluation of his injuries by an Owen County EMS ambulance. The accident remains under investigation by the OCSD.

Dhom said an autopsy for Fishel is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday morning in Terre Haute with forensic pathologist Dr. Roland Kohr.

An accident reconstructionist from the Indiana State Police was also requested to assist with the investigation.
