PCPL brings free classes, technical support to Heritage Lake

In a continuing effort to bring computer classes and technical support to areas of Putnam County outside of Greencastle, Putnam County Public Library will be offering six free computer classes and two Community Help Desk sessions at the Heritage Lake clubhouse in July and early August. Tuesday, July 11 will begin a threepart, hands-on computer basics course, as well as, classes focusing on tablets and smartphones, basic Internet use, and safety and security.

Tuesday, July 11, from 1-3 p.m., Introduction to Computers Part One will help you understand how the computer works will give you the confidence to tackle future tasks on your own. Topics covered, History of Computers, How a Computer Works, Basic Computer Operation, and Mouse Exercises.

Tuesday, July 18, from 1-3 p.m., part two of our Introduction to Computers series will build on part one by teaching you to understand the words people use when talking about computers. We will get used to navigating the computer and understanding the why and the how. Topics covered: Applications, Operating Systems, and Hands on with a Graphical User Interface.

Tuesday, July 25, from 1-3 p.m., part three of our Introduction to Computers series will build on part two by walking you through the most important parts of your operating system, managing your installed applications, and organizing your personal computer files. Topics covered: Files and folders, copy and paste, and adding and removing applications.

On Friday, July 14, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., tablets and smartphones class is for those who need help with a new device, or are considering making a purchase. We will discuss the different types of devices available including the Apple iPad, Microsoft Windows tablets, Androidbased Google tablets and smartphones. Attendees will learn basic skills needed to connect to the Internet as well as how to use interactive maps, install applications and games, listen to music, and watch movies.

On Friday, July 28, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Introduction to the Internet will introduce patrons to search engines, browsers, and some of the best websites on the Internet.

On Friday, August 4, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Safety and Security on the Internet class will discuss safeguarding your privacy and keeping your computer and information secure while using the Internet.

All classes are for beginners and are free and open to the public but registration is required since space is limited. Classes are two hours long with a break and registration is now open. To sign up for any of the upcoming classes, you can view the library website at pcpl21.org, call Mike at 765-653-2755 Ext. 118, or stop by our circulation or reference desks at the library.

Putnam County Public Library will also hold two Community Help Desk sessions at the Heritage Lake Clubhouse on Friday, July 21 from 11a.m. - 1 p.m. and Tuesday, August 1 from 1-3 p.m. to diagnose and help repair your computer and electronics. If your computer problem is severe enough, or would take longer than 30 minutes to fix, we may recommend you take it to a professional. The Community Help Desk is first-come first-served and is free and open to the public. Patrons must accompany their computers or electronics at all times, please no drop offs. Patrons may bring in laptops, desktop towers, tablets, cell phones, anything electronic. Please bring any power cables with you.
