Change the penalty

Dear Editor,

According to our Indiana Code for animal abuse, it is only a Class A misdemeanor to abandon, beat, electrocute, neglect or starve an animal. The only exceptions are animal fighting contests, cruelty to law enforcement, search and rescue or service animals.

No matter how hideous the crime, these perpetrators receive only a suspended sentence and probation and often don’t have to pay for rehabilitation of the animals they abuse.

I believe changing the penalty for intentional cruelty to a Class D felony is necessary in order to give our judicial system more leverage to deal with these types of brutality.

If you feel the same, please contact your representatives and express your opinion.

Thank you,
James Wilson
