Al Tucker is grand marshal

Cloverdale Main Street would like to introduce this year’s Grand Marshal, Al Tucker.

Al served three years in the United States Navy then married his wife Joan, of 56 years, and worked a full time job while attending Indiana State University in which he graduated from in three years.

Al and Joan raised three children, Brad, Dawn and Chad who all graduated from Cloverdale High School.

Mr. Tucker coached Jr. Varsity basketball for several years at Cloverdale High School and then succeeded coach Jim Miller as the Varsity coach.

In 1968 the Clover’s earned a state record of 50 straight regular season wins over a three and a half year span, and team member Rick Ford was named to the Indiana All-Star Team.

In 1975 Al started the CHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter. In 1982 he was named IBCA District 3 Coach of the year and the Clovers played in the Hall of Fame Classic. The following year they won sectional and regional titles and his son Chad was named to the Indiana Basketball All Star Team.

After serving as Jr. Varsity Coach for four years and Varsity Coach for 17 years, Mr. Tucker resigned from Cloverdale Community Schools with an overall varsity record of 256-135 and the school system ranked third in the state!

Off on a totally new adventure, Al served as a State Farm Insurance Agent in Greencastle, Ind. for 23 years. Things didn’t stop there though.

In 2014 he received the Putnam County Foundation “Spirit of Philanthropy” award for his charitable giving then the following year he was awarded the first annual “Coaching Alumnus of the Year” award from the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation and Sports Department at Indiana State University and the Cloverdale High School Basketball Facility was dedicated and named “Tucker Court.”

In 2017 he was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

He continues to support the Hall of Fame via the Brick & Plaque Program and is a lifetime member. He also serves on the Board for the Putnam County Community Foundation and was instrumental in creating a sizable endowment to fund scholarships for Cloverdale graduates and he is also an active member of the Cloverdale United Methodist Church for over 50 years.
