Author Talk: Mike DeCarlo

Join artist and author Mike DeCarlo for a conversation about his newly-released book of portraits, “Sketchpad: The Pencil Art of Mike DeCarlo,” at the Putnam County Public Library on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.

Mike will talk about the genesis of the book itself, why he chose the people he sketched for the book, and discuss his approach to portraiture. Mike will have sketches for sale, and will sign and sell copies of his book.

Mike DeCarlo started out as a Sports Cartoonist for The New Haven Register in 1978; the youngest sports cartoonist on the East Coast. He began apprenticing for Dick Giordano in 1979, and after 18 months began his own accredited work for DC Comics for books like Green Lantern, Teen Titans, Legion of SuperHeroes, Warlord and a long stint on Batman. In 1989 he also added Marvel Comics to his workload, spending time on Thor, Conan the Barbarian and Iron Man.

In the mid-90‘s, Mike started to gravitate to special projects for Time/ Warner, while moving towards animation style genres for Disney, Archie Comics and The Simpsons.

He now engages in many privately funded projects for smaller publishers and houses, does many commissions, and recently self-published his own book of pencil portraits of famous people. Please join us at the Putnam County Public Library on Oct. 24 to learn more about Mike DeCarlo’s work.
