Poland Community Lions Club serves

The 23 members of the Poland Community Lions Club truly take the international organization’s motto of “We Serve” to heart. The group is presently working to support our annual Easter egg hunt with a pulled pork dinner on March 17 at Cook’s Corner Café in Poland from 4 – 8 p.m. Carry out will be available with cookies and ice cream for dessert (All for $9).

The club supported the Poland Street Light Fund and hosted an all-you-can-eat chili dinner in February at Cook’s Corner Café in Poland.

In addition to supporting the Street Light Fund, the group works to maintain the beauty of Poland. Each spring and fall, members pick up trash one mile east and one mile west of Poland, on Highway 42.

Through a grant from Endeavor Communications last spring, the group was able to replace the 16 flags which line the two main streets in Poland.

Last fall, funds from a grant from the Clay County Community Foundation enabled the group to re-mulch the playground and purchase two benches and a trash can in the Lions Community Park.

After acquiring the Poland Community Park when the Clay County park system was disbanded, the club has maintained the park, replaced playground equipment, and repaired the picnic pavilion (after it was storm damaged), and continue planting a new generation of trees to grace the park.

In addition to the pulled pork dinner and chili supper, community events sponsored by the club include the Annual Easter Egg Hunt, (March 24), an annual Celebrate Poland event (Sept. 8) and Breakfast with Santa (TBA), as well as participation in International Lions functions: collecting glasses, assisting Lions with student eye exams, and supporting other Lions programs.
