Clover rally falls short, lose to Eels

The Cloverdale varsity baseball team traveled to Clay City Tuesday, May 8, falling to the host Eels, 7-5.

The Eels grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first, 2-0. The Clovers remained scoreless until the sixth inning. Nick Winders tripled on a line drive to center field to start things off. Next, Tyce Jackson singled on a fly ball to right field, scoring Winders for a 2-1 score. With two outs, Jack Havenor hit a ground ball and reached on an error, scoring Jackson

With the game tied, the Eels added five insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, 7-2.

The Clovers plated three more runs in the top of the seventh, falling just short with the rally. With one out, Winders homered to center field on the first pitch of the at bat. An Eel error allowed Watts to reach on a ground ball. Next up, Jacob Metzger sent a home run over the right field fence, scoring both himself and Caydhan Stevens, a pinch runner for Watts, for the 7-5 score.

The Clover offense was led by Metzger with three hits including a home run and a triple and Winders with a home run and a single Also getting hits was Tyce Jackson, Nick Smith, Jack Havenor and Corey Bennett.

Winders pitched a complete game throwing 68 pitches in 4.0 innings. He allowed five runs, all earned, on five hits while walking two and striking out two.
