Putnam County Public Library receives grant

Putnam County Public Library is proud to announce that they have been awarded a Dollar General Literacy Foundation Adult Literacy Grant for their Putnam Adult Literacy Services (PALS) program. The Adult Literacy Grants are awarded each year to nonprofits that provide direct services to adults in need of literacy assistance.

According to Sarah Myers, Head of Reference at PCPL and co-director of the PALS program, the $2,000 grant will be used to grow and build the program. “We’d like to use the money to promote the program within the community so we can continue to grow the number of both tutors and students enrolled in the program,” said Myers. She also noted that the program has made considerable progress in the last year. “We actually applied for the grant last year, but they program was too new. We weren’t able to show enough positive outcomes until this year.”

Barbara Fields Timm, who co-directs the program with Myers, noted that although the $2,000 grant is an exciting addition to the budget, it will not cover the program’s costs for the upcoming year. “That’s why we’ve decided to have a fundraising event over the summer.” The event, she says, will be held on July 13 and will feature author Abby Chew, as well as several local musicians. “We’ll have more information about the fundraiser in the coming weeks,” she noted.

If you or anyone you know would like to participate in the one-on-one tutoring provided by PALS, either as a student or a tutor, you can contact Cheryl Hayes, PALS Coordinator, at 765-653-2755, ext. 107, or by email at chayes@PCPL21.org.
