House cleaning is for the birds

Once breeding season is over, usually by mid-August, it’s a good idea to clean out the birdhouse. Remove old nesting material and scrub the house with a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water. Rinse well and leave it open to dry completely.

Clean feeders designed for ground-feeding birds twice a week. Clean with a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water for two to three minutes. Scrub with a stiff brush or a scouring pad, rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry completely before refilling. And for the hummingbird feeders, at least once a month, clean the feeder thoroughly with a solution of a quarter cup of bleach to one gallon of water. Soak the feeder in this solution for one hour, then clean with a bottle brush. Rinse well with running water and refill.
