Don’t be fooled by fad diets

Purdue Extension Corner

Have you ever seen a diet plan that mentioned eliminating or over indulging in certain foods? Have you heard of a diet plan that promised rapid weight loss? If you answered yes to these questions, you may have heard marketing for a fad diet.

The American Academy of Family Physicians (2018) defined fad diets as a “stylish weight-loss plan that promises dramatic results.” In determining if something is a fad diet or not research has shown that there are several questions one should ask about the claim/product.

1) Does the diet promise quick and rapid weight loss?

2) Does the diet focus on one particular food group, and exclude many others?

3) Does the diet advise supplements and or pills to coincide with the plan?

4) Does the diet results seem too good to be true?

These are just a few questions recommended by Pennington Biomedical Research Center to help one identify a fad diet. Whereas, the individual should always consult with their health care team to determine the best diet plan and healthy lifestyle change for them.

To create a more robust knowledge on Fad Diets, we will host a program entitled Fad Diets 101. The program will take place Tuesday, Sept. 11, 6 p.m., Purdue Extension Office. This program will discuss current health trends, dispel myths about fad diets, and focus on obtaining a healthy lifestyle. The program is in partnership with Purdue Extension, Indiana Extension Homemakers, and Putnam County Hospital. The program is free of charge, however participants may register for the program by calling 765-653-8411.
