Cloverdale football falls to Tiger Cubs

SHAWNA RUSH/FILE PHOTO | SPENCER EVENING WORLD The Cloverdale varsity football team visited Greencastle High School Friday, Aug. 24, falling 28-18 to the host Tiger Cubs.

Greencastle held a 14-0 advantage after the first quarter, but the Clovers scored on a safety and a 41-yard pass from Parker Watts to James Johnson to make it 14-8 before halftime.

The Clovers tacked on two more points on another safety early in the third, bringing the score to 14-10.

The Tiger Cubs the Clovers traded touchdowns in the third. The Clovers TD came on a 2-yard Watts run, following by a Smith run for the successful 2-point conversion.

To begin the fourth, Greencastle held a 21-18 advantage, but the Cubs were able to tack on another TD in the final frame for the 10-point win.

Jake Smith finished with 56 yards, Logan Abner 31, Watts six, Wyatt Helterbrand nine and Jake Wilkes one.

Johnson finished with one catch for 41 yards, Abner two for 19 yards, Wilkes three for 19 and Caydhan Stevens one for eight yards.

The Clover defense was led by Abner with 16 total tackles. Stevens had 13, Jalen Johnson eight, Tray Dickison seven, Trevor Woods six, Smith six, Ezra Sharp four, Niklas Hull three, Wilkes three, Helterbrand two, and Hunter Fox, Da’Shawn Highbaugh and Ford Mayhew one each.

The Clovers sacked the Tiger Cubs four times in the game with Abner tallying 1 1/2, Dickison and Woods one each and Steven 1/2.
