At the Library

Putnam Adult Literacy Services needs you!

Do you need help reading or know someone who does? Are you interested in volunteering your time to help someone improve their reading skills? The Putnam Adult Literary Services (PALS) program at the Putnam County Public Library is seeking adult learners and tutors to join their program. Adult learners can be anyone interested in improving their basic reading or writing in a free one on one session with a trained tutor. Tutors are volunteers who commit to going through 8 hours of training and giving at least 45 minutes a week to teach an adult to read. Tutors and learners arrange their own schedules but meet in the library and have access to research based materials. A new tutor training will be offered at the library on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 12-4 p.m. and followed up on Monday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m.-noon. Darco Hawxhurst a professional tutor-trainer for the VITAL program of Monroe County will be the presenter. Also featured will be speaker Lori Miller with Transformers of Putnam County and a Q&A with experienced tutors in the PALS program. Anyone, tutor or learner, interested in joining PALS should contact Cheryl Hayes at Putnam County Public Library by phone at 765-653-2755, ext. 107 or by email at chayes@ PCPL21.org.
